Maryland Alpha Will Rename Scholarship in Memory of

Anthony Monaco

Anthony Monaco, MD Alpha ’94, exemplified the term gentleman. He had an exceptional intellect and a humbling devotion to his beliefs. He was a top notch student and a talented sportsman. Throughout his life, whether it was in the various organizations he belonged to and took a leadership role in, as a tutor, or simply to aid a friend in need, he was a true volunteer, one you could always count on for a helping hand.

In his senior year of high school he was diagnosed as having a brain tumor. Anthony underwent 13 hours of surgery, and 6 months of intensive physical therapy. He returned and completed his senior year of high school, graduating in the top of his class with honors. He then went on to attend Johns Hopkins University and pledge Phi Kappa Psi. Complications from the surgery manifested themselves in the form of vision problems early in Anthony’s junior year at JHU, and he underwent a second surgery to correct the problem. Unfortunately, the surgery was not a complete success, but Anthony persevered. In 1998 he graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering and began his career with a Baltimore company as a simulations engineer, working to develop and implement software for industrial chemical process simulation and control. Through everything, he remained an active participant in campus life and in the Fraternity.

On July 27, 2001 he passed away as the result of a brain aneurysm.

Anthony's respectful treatment of his fellow man, his charitable gifts of time and talent to those who needed his aid, and his steadfast faith, endeared him to anyone who met him. Today, the Chapter announced that it will be renaming one of its annual scholarships in Anthony’s memory.

The Anthony Monaco Memorial Scholarship for Fraternal Spirit will be awarded each year to the Brother who best exemplifies the Fraternity’s founding principles, namely a commitment to serving others. In selecting the winner, an emphasis will be placed on philanthropic service, though more general factors such as leadership will be considered.

As part of the effort to honor Anthony, the Chapter seeks to raise at least $3,000 in annual donations to the CSF.  This is possible through the Bridge Builder program that National created. Matt Zaft is spearheading the drive and has personally committed to annually contribute $1,051 (his badge number) .  Thus, we are already more then a third of the way to the goal .  Very simply, when you become a Bridge Builder you commit to making a contribution each year.  You can set the amount you commit to as high or as low as you are comfortable doing.  You are also able to designate exactly where said contribution goes, i.e. only to the MD Alpha CSF.

You can become a Bridge Builder at www.pkpfoundation.org or by calling National at 317- 275-3400.

Maryland Alpha’s scholarship program is made possible through alumni contributions to the Chapter Scholarship Fund (CSF). An alumni committee under the Maryland Alpha House Corporation oversees the scholarship program. Each year, the CSF provides scholarships to recognize leadership, service, and academic excellence among the brotherhood. Since its inception in 2000, over 40 Maryland Alphas have received awards from the CSF.
